In June 2023, Copenhagen Jazz Orchestra collaborated with renowned French composer and saxophonist Pierre Bertrand to present “La Caja Negra,” a project that masterfully fused the passionate intensity of flamenco with the dynamic energy of big band jazz. The term “La Caja Negra,” translating to “The Black Box,” refers to the traditional flamenco drum, symbolizing the heart of Spanish flamenco music.
This collaboration featured an exceptional lineup of artists, including the captivating vocalist Paloma Pradal and the versatile vocalist, percussionist, and dancer Sabrina Romero. Their profound understanding of both jazz and flamenco traditions brought an authentic and electrifying presence to the performances.
The project showcased Pierre Bertrand’s original compositions and arrangements, which seamlessly blended flamenco’s intricate rhythms and melodies with the rich textures of a jazz orchestra. This synthesis created a vibrant tapestry of sound, celebrating the shared improvisational spirit and emotional depth inherent in both musical styles.”La Caja Negra” was performed at Den Sorte Diamant (The Black Diamond) in Copenhagen during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2023.
